It’s not an easy question to answer, especially since it has been over three decades since Washington County last held a property assessment.
Did the county get my property assessment right? Is my house, or business, worth this much money if I were selling it?
If you are a property owner in Washington County, you have between now and August 10 to come up with an answer, or wait until next year for the next opportunity to appeal.
Free assessment evaluation
We are getting a lot of calls for information and for a free evaluation to determine if an appeal is a good idea. While we can’t tell you how much your taxes will be affected by the assessment, we will give you one consistent message.
Make sure your house is properly assessed. You want to make sure you are paying your fair share of taxes, and not too much. If your house is under assessed consider yourself very fortunate. The odds of that, however, are not great.
Our experience has shown, however, that homeowners tend to think their property is worth more than it really is. We have seen homeowners handling their own property appeals gush about their home, or their lot, or improvements they have made, not realizing they have effectively sabotaged their case.
Get it right
Most people will do nothing, assuming the people at Tyler Technology who conducted the assessment work did their job correctly and know what they are doing. You know what they say about people who assume.
Whatever you decide to do about your assessment, try to keep one thing in mind. Don’t worry about millage. Don’t worry about what your neighbor is assessed.
Make sure your house is properly assessed. If you need help in that area, give us a call at Steidl & Steinberg for a free evaluation.
